About Us
Solar Cinema Nepal :
Solar Cinema Nepal is a non-political and non-denominational organization that has been working for cultural cooperation and development since 2012. It has already organized more than 300 public screenings including 30 movies produced by local people.
Solar Cinema Nepal commenced after conducting two-year-long piloting projects led by Swiss Solar Culture in Mid-West Nepal (March/ April 2013) and the Eastern part of Nepal (October 2014 to January 2015) by foot with a video camera, Nepalese movies, and equipment for creating a portable solar Cinema.
The organization is registered in Kathmandu District Administrative Office, the government of Nepal and is affiliated with Social Welfare Council in 2015 as a non-profit organization.
Concepts :
The concept is simple; at each village, solar panels charge a battery. A screen is tautened between two houses or two trees. Simple cinema equipment, such as a projector, a video player, and a speaker is installed. Nepalese films, dealing with people’s everyday lives then are shown to the inhabitants. Additionally, the inhabitants have the opportunity to produce a short film themselves; films dealing with local issues. The Solar Cinema assists and guides the short film projects. The aim is to launch a discussion about local issues and happenings and to provide a platform for articulation. The movie nights are free for everyone; they shall entertain and at the same time encourage people to think about their daily problems.

Team LeaderEducational Filmmaker and Team Leader of Solar Cinema Nepal. In 2008, he graduated from Tribhuvan University (Master in English Literature) – in social science and development. In 2010, he perused a career in building an educational platform through a movie to motivate school, teachers, and students. He also worked as an educational consultant, developing film programs. In 2012, he started to work as a program leader in Solar Cinema in Nepal, as a piloting project run by Swiss Solar Culture. In February 2015, he established the Solar Cinema Nepal as an organization together with his partners to localize the project in Nepal. Agricultural ScientistA professional development worker with expertise in Agriculture, Gender, Urban and Rural livelihood, disaster preparedness, and emergency response, she graduated with her study in Agricultural Science. She worked in international development organizations for more than a decade as like Helvetas Swiss Intercooperation Nepal, Community Self Reliance Center, and Ox-farm International. Sudip Kuikel
A cheerful and dynamic researcher, writer, and manager, Mr. Kuikel is an English Literature graduate, affiliated with Tribhuvan University in 2015. After he graduates, he has been engaging in studying the ancient and indigenous knowledge, practices, and skills of Nepal. Experienced in networking, marketing, human resource mobilization, and event management, Mr. Kuikel has published several articles on ancient wisdom and practices of Nepal in www.khojpatra.com. Besides this, he has been engaging in several social works and other business initiatives. Since 2017, he has been involving in Solar Cinema as a management leader. An experienced video editor, graphic designer, networking, and web developer, Mr. Giri is a visual effect graduate. Tech enthusiast, deep thinkers, and self-motivated, Mr. Giri is also a returnee migrant who worked in Dubai and Bahrain for four years as a sales representative in a department store & Manpower Agency. After he return from Bahrain, he has been involving in Solar Cinema as an active and dynamic team member. Besides this, he is also working as a web developer in a renowned tech company in Nepal. A professional hospitality manager with proficiency in professional relationship, human resources mobilisation, and hospitality services. she has done her executive master of business administration in public relations and hospitality management and working as a Manager guest relations in a reputed organisation for more than a decade.Besides this, she has been engaging in several social works and other business initiatives. She has known Solar Cinema Nepal from 2017 and was very much fascinated by the contribution of Solar Cinema in terms of reaching to the grass root level to uplift the life of rural people by introducing a modern technology as a part of education and since then she has been contributing to Solar Cinema in many ways as a like-mined expert and finally, she had decided to contribute to Solar Cinema Nepal as an active team member. Cinematographer
A renowned cinematographer in the Nepali film industry. He graduated Film Studies in Diploma from Oscar College, Nepal in 2009. In 2010, he worked as a director in Videography in the documentary film Tears of War (2010). In 2011, he worked as an assistant director in Videography in the Nepali feature movie Suntali, Sungava, Goodbye Kathmandu. In 2015, he worked as director of Videography in Nepali film; Yo Saino Mayako, The Sponsor, and Satisaal in Inferno. In February 2015, he established the Solar Cinema Nepal as an organization together with his partners to localize the project in Nepal. He is a lifetime member of Solar Cinema Nepal.
